Let’s get down to the roots of activism: swapping survival skills, doing it ourselves, and centering the experiences of those facing intersecting oppressions. And let’s pass the mic to superfat folks, who bear the burden of so many other NOLOSErs’ fears and anxieties, and who so often get left behind when fatties try to prove we’re “just like everyone else.” We survive as individuals, but we thrive as a community of fat and queer revolutionaries. Hello Everyone,

(QTIPOC = Queer/Trans* Indigenous People/People Of Colour)

We are searching for individuals interested in forming a steering committee
to organize a QTIPOC Conference in Victoria, BC, traditional Lekwungen
Territory.

Several people have been discussing and expressing interest in seeing a
QTIPOC Conference take place in Victoria, BC, Lekwungen Territory, and
these are the first steps in seeing it happen. There have been no decisions
made yet about what such a conference or gathering would look like, but
there is interest in forming a steering committee of folks in Victoria who
would be able to regularly get together and plan the conference. As such,
this is a call out to folks interested in joining the steering committee to
attend a meeting on May 18th at 10:00 AM. The meeting will take place at
Wild Coffee, 632 Yates St, upstairs in their meeting room.

Please pass and forward this call-out to your listserves, friends or
acquaintances, keeping in mind that this meeting and the steering committee
are intended for folks who self-identify as queer/trans* Indigenous
people/people of colour. This meeting will decide what the roles and
responsibilities of the steering committee will be in the process of
organizing a conference, with the possibility for stipends being provided
to individuals that eventually form the steering committee and/or take on
responsibilities for planning the conference.

To give a little background on myself and how this process started, my name
is Tribesty Nguyen and I’m a queer man of colour who has lived on Lekwungen
Territories for the past 6 years. I have some funding from the Students of
Colour Collective and the UVic Pride Collective to start the initial
facilitation of planning this conference, and both collectives have
committed some funding to help this conference take place. That being said,
my role in this process so far has been solely administrative, and no
decisions on the actual conference have been made. This initial meeting to
form a steering committee will lay out the organizing process for the
conference and all other decisions, including the direction, vision, theme,
etc., will follow according to the formed steering committee.

Job Description:

We are seeking a Settlement Outreach Facilitator reporting to Gaylene Turner, Settlement Coordinator that will work within our Settlement Services Program. The ideal candidate will provide a strong sense of welcoming to newcomers at our outreach offices on Mondays and Wednesdays delivering exemplary customer service. She/he will understand and support ICA’s mission and possess experience in settlement and integration of newcomers to Canada. Experience working with youth considered an asset. This position requires strong communication, interpersonal skills, excellent organizational abilities and exceptional cultural competency.

Responsibilities:

Spend regular hours in the outreach offices and provide intake services to walk-in and scheduled clients.
Schedule appointments for clients residing in outreach areas with ICA settlement workers.
Attend community events and raise awareness about services available through ICA; set up and staff information tables as needed.
Organize settlement workshops in outreach areas; arrange for guest speakers and facilitators.
Organize other settlement programming to benefit clients in outreach areas, e.g., buddy conversation program.
Develop promotional materials such as posters and brochures pertinent to the outreach offices; work with Communications Coordinator on such materials.

Position Qualifications:

1. Education and Training

Undergraduate degree in social work or social sciences, or equivalent combination of formal education background and related job experience.
Experience and knowledge in the area of service provision in a cross-cultural environment.
Experience working with immigrants, refuges and international clients.
Knowledge of community resources and a community development approach to working with other community service providers.
An understanding of the social, legal, and economic issues surrounding the immigration process as well as experience in non-profit organizations.

2. Job Skills and Abilities

Fluency and competency in spoken and written English.
Fluency in a second language would be considered an asset.
Experience working with youth considered an asset.
Excellent community outreach and engagement skills.
Ability to represent ICA in a positive, professional manner to the public and community stakeholders.
An effective intercultural communicator, both in group settings and on-on-one.
Excellent organizational skills; ability to envision, plan, and implement events in outreach areas.
Excellent time management and record keeping skills.
Valid BC driver’s license and vehicle a definite asset.

OFFICE COORDINATOR FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA PRIDE COLLECTIVE

UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA STUDENTS’ SOCIETY

FUNCTION:
1. Office Coordinator for the University of Victoria Pride Collective

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
1. The Office Coordinator will be responsible to the UVic Pride Collective and to the
University of Victoria Student Society (reporting through the general manager).
2. The Office Coordinator, together with the elected UVic Pride Collective Coordinators, will
supervise the person/s hired for the Work Study position.

ORGANIZATIONAL DUTIES:
1. Uphold and make available the UVic Pride Collective Constitution and Bylaws and all
current policies. Develop (update, review, clarify, draft) these core documents as necessary.
2. Organize and participate in Collective and General Meetings and ensure that meeting
minutes are taken and posted after the meeting.
3. In collaboration with the Pride Collective, organize projects and events relevant to the
mandate.
4. In collaboration with the Pride Collective, provide advocacy for queer persons on campus
and in broader communities.
5. Maintain and make available a current list of community resources and supports for
reference and referrals.
6. Support volunteers with the organization and maintenance of the Pride library as necessary.
7. Assist the Resource Coordinator to collect and develop resources for the Pride Centre.
8. Work with Collective members and the Advocacy Council representative to establish and
maintain relationships between UVic Pride and other advocacy groups on campus and in the
broader communities.
9. Serve as a resource person for committees, volunteers, and project leaders.
10. Other duties as required.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:
1. Along with the elected coordinators: check and respond to e-mail, phone messages, and
postal mail and manage online communications (mailing list announcements and website
updates)
2. Along with the Collective Coordinators develop job description, work plan, train, supervise
and evaluate Work Study staff.
3. Organize maintenance as needed to ensure the office space is accessible, clean, and
welcoming.
4. Maintain regularly scheduled office hours.
5. Ensure that UVic Pride committees, volunteers and project leaders have access to materials
and space required for their dedicated activities.
6. In collaboration with the Safer Space Coordinator, work to create safer spaces within the
office and at events.
7. Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Minimum one year experience working and/or organizing within a social justice
environment.
2. Experience in an organizing or leadership capacity involving advocacy or activism
3. Strong understanding of and demonstrated commitment to anti-oppressive and inclusive
organizing and practices.
4. In depth knowledge and understanding of and commitment to working against all forms of
oppression and marginalization
5. Ability to articulate what a safer space might look like and have strategies for upholding a
safer space
6. Demonstrated commitment to upholding the values within Pride’s Constitution and policies,
especially the Anti-Oppression and Anti-Racism Policy
7. Understanding of the implications of organizing on stolen Indigenous lands and a
demonstrated commitment to anti-colonial practices and values
8. An understanding of internalized oppressive values and how they affect safer spaces.
9. Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and ensure projects reach completion.
10. Ability to effectively work within a collective and independently.
11. Demonstrated understanding of collective-based decision making and experience with
facilitating collective conversations
12. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
13. Experience working with a computer (orientation to Mac OS X and Microsoft Office will be provided) Training and resources on anti-oppressive practice and inclusive language will be organized or
provided as needed.

This is a one year term, part-time unionized position with the United Steelworkers at 15 hours a week during the school year and 20 hours a week May 1st – August 31st.

This position is restricted to self-identified queer and/or trans* people (refer to Charter of Rights and
Freedoms, Article 15, subsection 2).

UVic Pride works to create spaces that are inclusive, respectful

It was truly upsetting to find our VSA’s sign slashed, vandalized and shredded on the ground outside our office. We at UO VSA wish to promote tolerance, peace, understanding and friendship to all students, irregardless of their race or nationality. Although it is shocking and saddening to have this happen to us, we will NOT be intimidated by this cowardly and disgusting act. To the individual who did this to us, I want to make this personally clear: You do NOT scare us, you will NOT break us, and you will NOT crush our resolve to promote and celebrate our culture here at our University. We will continue, as always, to provide a family to our members, serve as a resource to our campus, and stand in solidarity against racism, prejudice, ignorance and cowardice.

Many of us have experienced situations where we find ourselves suddenly present, in the moment. In that time and place, we are suddenly aware, that we have gone through a type of metamorphosis. Whether changed through experience or finding that part of ourselves which we believed we lost or hid away, we become aware… we awaken. ”

We invite you to share with us your experiences of awakening. Please consider submitting to PULSE, the Students of Colour Collective anti-racist zine. For 2013, the theme is awakening. We welcome any medium of expression including, but not limited to, collage, poetry, silkscreens, photos, prose, paintings, and even audio/video!

We recognize that not all folks who identify as people of colour are “visible” and that all racialized experiences are complicated, and we welcome submissions that highlight this reality. We are seeking to create a space and community where folks with racialized experiences are recognized and honoured. As such, we would love to hear a variety of voices, and encourage folks who identify as an Indigenous person/person of colour, including all identities and backgrounds, sexualities, genders, abilities, health and socioeconomic locations to submit!

“Hari Kondabolu is a Brooklyn-based comedian who has appeared on Conan, Jimmy Kimmel and Comedy Central. He also writes for FX’s Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell.

Hari has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, John Oliver’s New York Standup Show and the 2007 HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. His Comedy Central Presents half-hour special debuted in February of 2011 and two months later, he made his UK television debut with a set on BBC 3’s “Russell Howard’s Good News.”

Hari also co-hosts the mostly improvised, monthly talk show The Untitled Kondabolu Brothers Project with his younger brother Ashok (“Dap” from hip hop group Das Racist) in New York City.

A former immigrant rights organizer in Seattle, Hari also earned a Masters in Human Rights from the London School of Economics in 2008, writing a merit- earning dissertation entitled “Mexican Returnees as Internally Displaced People: An Argument for the Protection of Economic Migrants Under the UN Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement.” This is, by far, the least funny thing he’s ever written.”
